Mitzvah Parties

A Bar Mitzvah or Bat Mitzvah Is the Party of the Year

A bar mitzvah (for a boy at 13) or a bat mitzvah (for a girl at 12 or 13) marks the day a child becomes responsible for the commandments. After the service comes the celebration, and for most families it is the biggest party they will throw until a wedding: the grand entrance, the candle lighting, the hora, the photo montage and a dance floor that does not empty.

We have DJed and run bar and bat mitzvahs for years. We plan the night with the family, MC every moment, bring the dancers and the musicians, light the room with the name on the wall and cover the photos and video, so one team handles it all. Below: ideas for each moment, what it costs, three packages and a planning timeline.

  • We know the traditions

The hora, the candle lighting, the blessings and Israeli and Jewish music, for Reform, Conservative and Orthodox families.

  • DJ, MC and planner

Dancers, a saxophonist or percussionist, lighting, the montage screen, photo and video from one company.

Mitzvah Ideas

Bar and Bat Mitzvah Ideas, Moment by Moment

Most bar and bat mitzvah parties follow the same order of the night. Here are our ideas for each moment and what it takes.

Bat mitzvah candle lighting ceremony table with the cake, candles and a balloon arch
A bat mitzvah candle lighting table with the cake and a balloon arch.

The Grand Entrance

The doors open, the room goes dark and the bar or bat mitzvah walks in to their song under moving lights, with the MC announcing them. Plan the song, the order of the family entrance and a lighting cue with your DJ.
  • Entrance song and family order
  • MC announcement
  • Moving lights and a spotlight
  • Lighting packages from $1,295

The Candle Lighting Ceremony

Thirteen candles, or fourteen with one for good luck, each lit by family and friends with a short poem and a song. The MC calls each group to the cake while the DJ plays their song, and the room needs a microphone that works everywhere.
  • 13 or 14 candles, a song for each
  • MC calls each group up
  • Wireless microphones
  • Write the candle list 3 weeks ahead

The Hora

The hora is the moment everyone joins: the circle, Hava Nagila and the bar or bat mitzvah lifted on a chair. Our DJ knows when to start it and how long to keep it going, and party dancers lead the circle and pull every guest in.
  • Hava Nagila and Israeli sets
  • Party dancers to lead the circle
  • Chairs for the lift from the venue
  • Timed with the meal and the photos

The Photo Montage

Twelve or thirteen years of photos on a big screen. The projector is $395, screens are $150, $225 and $295 for 120, 150 and 180 inch, and the Presentation Package is $595 with a 120 inch screen. We ran one at a bat mitzvah in New Rochelle with the projector hidden at the back.
  • Projector $395
  • Screens 120, 150 and 180 inch
  • Presentation Package $595
  • Send the file a week ahead

The Theme and the Name on the Wall

Sports, Broadway, a favorite city, a color, or simply the name in lights. A gobo monogram projects the name on the wall or the dance floor for $495, and uplighting and balloon decor in the theme colors pull the room together.
  • Gobo monogram $495
  • Uplights $75 each in theme colors
  • Balloon arches and centerpieces
  • Send the design 3 weeks ahead

Dancers, Musicians, Photo and Video

Turn the party into a show: a saxophonist or percussionist playing live with the DJ, belly dancers or an LED dance show, dancers to fill the floor, and a photographer and videographer with an album and an online gallery.
  • Saxophonist or percussionist
  • Belly dancers and special shows
  • Photographer and videographer
  • Album and online photo gallery

Book early. Mitzvah Saturdays and Sundays book six to twelve months ahead, often as soon as the date is set with the synagogue. Reserve the DJ and the entertainment right after the venue.

Planning Guide

How to Plan a Bar or Bat Mitzvah Party: A 6 Step Checklist

Most families plan a bar or bat mitzvah party over nine to twelve months, starting from the date the synagogue sets. Here is the order that works, and the timeline below shows what to book when.

Bar and Bat Mitzvah Planning in 6 Steps

  1. Set the date and the venue. The synagogue sets the date of the service; the party is often the same evening or the next day. Party halls and hotels for Saturday nights book first.
  2. Book the DJ and MC early. The DJ runs the timeline, the hora and the candle lighting, so book right after the venue and meet to plan the night.
  3. Choose the theme and the entertainment. A theme and colors tie the room together. Decide on dancers, a saxophonist or percussionist, and a photo booth.
  4. Write the candle lighting list. Thirteen or fourteen candles for family and friends, each with a short poem and a song. Give the list to the DJ and MC.
  5. Build the photo montage. Pick 80 to 120 photos from birth to now, with two or three songs, and send it a week ahead so we test it on the projector.
  6. Confirm the timeline. The DJ and MC confirms the run of show with you and the hall: entrance, blessings, candle lighting, hora, dinner and dancing.

Common Questions About Bar and Bat Mitzvah Parties

After the service, the party usually runs about five hours: the grand entrance, the blessings over the bread and wine, dinner, the candle lighting ceremony with family and friends, the hora with the bar or bat mitzvah lifted on a chair, the photo montage and a lot of dancing. A DJ and MC keeps it all on time.

A bar mitzvah is for a boy at 13 and a bat mitzvah is for a girl, at 12 in Orthodox communities and usually 13 in Reform and Conservative ones. The party traditions are the same: the entrance, the candle lighting, the hora and the dancing.

Our Mitzvah Party DJ and MC package is $2,995 for 5 hours of music with a planning meeting, PA Plus sound, 8 uplights, dance floor lighting and two wireless microphones. Extra hours are $295. Thirteen candles, or fourteen with one for good luck, a list of the family and friends lighting each one with a short poem, a song for each group and a wireless microphone. Give the list to the DJ and MC three weeks ahead so the songs are ready.

The DJ starts it at the right moment with Hava Nagila and Israeli music and keeps it going as long as the room wants. Party dancers lead the circle and bring everyone in. The chairs for the lift usually come from the venue.

Broadway, a favorite city like Paris or New York, sports, a color palette, glow parties and Hollywood. The easiest way to tie any theme together is uplighting in the colors, the name projected on the wall and balloon decor to match.

Yes. The projector is $395, screens are $150, $225 and $295 for 120, 150 and 180 inch, and the Presentation Package is $595 with a 120 inch screen. Send us the file a week ahead and we test it before the party.

Yes. The Kiddush and Luncheon package is $1,295 for the day, with PA sound and two wireless microphones for the speeches and blessings and a projector with a 120 inch screen for the montage.

Six to twelve months, right after the venue. Popular Saturday nights and Sundays go first.

A 50% deposit reserves your date. The balance is due 14 days before the party, by Zelle, check or cash, so nothing is left to settle on the day and you can enjoy it. Every price is written on the package, and travel outside Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens is quoted up front.
