Helium per balloon follows the balloon makers' fill charts (Qualatex and Anagram). Real yield can vary about 10% with the brand, the shape and how full you fill them, so leave a little room. 9 to 14 in foil shapes and 16 in foil letters are air-fill only. Every tank comes with a regulator and a full 7 days.
    How to Size It

How to Calculate How Much Helium You Need for Balloons

How much helium for balloons depends on the size and the type of each balloon. Prefer to work it out by hand? These are the same four steps the helium balloon calculator runs for you. The full guide explains how much helium you need and why the sphere formula comes up short.
    • Count Your Balloons

Write down how many balloons you have of each size and type: latex, foil or bubble.

    • Find Helium per Balloon

An 11 inch latex takes about 0.5 cubic feet, a 9 inch about 0.25. See the chart below for every size.

    • Add It Up

Multiply each count by its helium and add the totals. That is the cubic feet you need.

    • Add 10% and Pick the Tank

Add about 10% for extras and pops, then pick the smallest tank that holds the total.

    Helium Chart

Helium Tank Size Chart and How Much Helium Is in One Balloon

This helium balloon chart shows how much helium each latex, foil and bubble balloon takes, how long it floats, and how many of each size every tank fills. It covers all six helium tank sizes we rent. Find your balloon in the helium tank size chart, then read across to the tank you need, or let the helium balloon calculator above add up a mixed order.

How to read it: find your balloon, then read across to the first tank at or above your count. Each number is for one balloon size and a full tank; leave about 10% extra for pops and fuller fills. Mixing sizes? The calculator adds them for you.

Helium per balloon follows the balloon makers’ fill charts (the Qualatex helium chart and Anagram). Foil numbers and letters are flat, so they take much less helium than a round balloon of the same height. Float times are typical indoors without Hi-Float (see how long helium balloons last); heat, cold and wind shorten them. 100 standard 11 inch latex balloons take about 50 cubic feet, so the Extra Small tank (60 cu ft) covers them.

Prices: the Tiny tank is $195, Extra Small 5 and Small 5, each with the regulator and a full 7 days. The Medium, Large and Extra Large tanks are quoted by phone. See all sizes on the helium tank rental page.

Tips for Ordering Helium for Balloons

From thousands of balloons filled at our events: three things that keep your order right.

Helium balloon calculator in action: a girl fills a yellow balloon from a rented helium tank
Fill latex balloons on the day of the party.

    Add a 10% Buffer

Balloons vary in size and a few always pop or need a top-up. Order about 10% more helium than your total, especially for arches and ceilings.
    • Count every balloon size
    • Add 10% to the total
    • Pick the tank above it

    Use Hi-Float for Long Events

Plain latex floats about 12 to 24 hours indoors. Hi-Float inside the balloon stretches it to 2 to 4 days, for events that run late or decor that stays overnight.
    • Latex: 12 to 24 hours
    • With Hi-Float: 2 to 4 days
    • Foil: 3 to 5 days or more

    Fill Latex the Same Day

Fill latex on the day of the party and foil a day ahead. Book the tank early for spring, graduation and holiday weekends.
    • Foil can be filled a day ahead
    • Latex the same day
    • Book 2 to 3 weeks ahead in busy seasons

Arches and ceilings need the most helium, so add the 10% buffer.

    Got Questions?

    Questions About Helium for Balloons

It depends on the tank and the balloon size. With standard 11 inch latex balloons, the Tiny tank (33 cu ft) fills about 66, the Extra Small (60 cu ft) about 120, the Small (90 cu ft) about 180, the Medium (110 cu ft) about 220, the Large (219 cu ft) about 438 and the Extra Large (291 cu ft) about 582.

About 50 cubic feet for 100 standard 11 inch latex balloons, and about 55 for 12 inch. The Extra Small tank (60 cu ft, $285) covers it. Foil and bigger latex balloons take more, so add them in the calculator.

No. Foil balloons smaller than about 18 inches, such as 9, 10, 12 and 14 inch foil shapes and 16 inch foil letters and numbers, are air-fill only. They hold so little helium that the lift cannot carry the weight of the foil and seams, so they sit on the table instead of floating. Use them on sticks, as cake toppers or taped into garlands and walls. Helium foil starts at about 18 inches. The one smaller foil that floats is the 16 inch Orbz globe, because it is a full round ball.

A 9 inch latex takes about 0.25 cubic feet, an 11 inch about 0.5, a 16 inch about 1.5 and a 36 inch giant about 15. An 18 inch foil balloon takes about 0.5 cubic feet. These figures come from the Qualatex helium chart, the fill chart balloon professionals use.

Less than most people think. An 18 inch foil round, heart or star takes about 0.5 cubic feet, the same as an 11 inch latex. A 34 inch foil number takes about 1.4 cubic feet and a 40 inch number about 2, because foil numbers are flat. A 36 inch jumbo round takes about 4.4. Foil smaller than about 18 inches is air-fill only. See the helium and weight chart for more shapes, or add your foil balloons to the helium balloon calculator.

A 6 ft arch uses 60 to 80 balloons, about 30 to 40 cubic feet, so the Extra Small tank fits. A 12 ft arch uses 130 to 160 balloons, about 65 to 80 cubic feet, so the Small tank (90 cu ft) fits.

Latex balloons float about 12 to 24 hours indoors, or 2 to 4 days with Hi-Float treatment. Foil balloons float 3 to 5 days or more. Bigger latex balloons float longer than small ones. Giant balloons are best filled on site, close to the event.

Yes. Add about 10% to your total. Balloons vary in size, and a few always pop or need a top-up, especially in arches and ceilings.

For a few dozen balloons, having us fill them saves you the work. For larger orders and do-it-yourself decor, a helium tank rental gives you the helium to fill everything on your own schedule for 7 days.
